Broken Part 4

Broken Part 4

Ronnie continued up the mountain and was nearing the Height of the Land quickly. He eased up a little on the gas as he made the final turn that would reveal the pull off for Height of the Land to him. The pull off began to come into view and quickly he saw the Saab and then the Massachusetts plates. His blood immediately came to a boil again and he had all he could do to keep from just ramming the car right then and there. He knew that if he did that now it would end up involving the police and while the local cops were pretty lenient towards the truckers but with so many witnesses it would likely be a different story. He slowed enough to be able to look at the people enjoying the view and saw the man he had been face to face with not long ago. Jed turned and the two made eye contact at that very moment. In a second, the truck was too far for either of them to see each other any longer. As the rig disappeared around the corner Jed felt a weight lift off his shoulders as now the driver was ahead of them and did not choose to stop and continue with a confrontation. Jed decided that the trucker was just venting and he happened to be the easy made target at that very moment. Now he felt as if they could continue their sightseeing drive without the fear of the truck suddenly appearing behind them and the driver becoming enraged at seeing them in his path yet again. He turned back to Erica and slid his arms around her waist. He pulled her close and took a very deep breath to help him relax. As he let his breath out he pulled her tighter and was just thankful for the view that was before them. He had been here before and enjoyed this same view but this time for some reason it seemed so much more beautiful to him. Erica put her hands on his and was thankful she had decided to take this trip with Jed. She loved him more than even she thought she could love someone. This was just what she needed and believed it was what they needed as well. A great little trip away from the insanity of Boston and the fast forward consuming life they led back there. There just never seemed to be enough time in a day for everything back home. The first thing that seemed to get pushed to the side was their relationship and neither of them meant for it to happen but it just seemed to work that way. This was a great way to strengthen the bond as it was just the two of them on this journey. She decided she would try even harder to just enjoy the things that maybe she had begun to take for granted and that included her relationship with Jed. He was a wonderful man and she was lucky to have him in her life and she knew that but sometimes let it slip from her mind. She turned and kissed him gently on the lips before making it a more passionate kiss to show him she was interested in him. She whispered in his ear that he would be hers tonight at the hotel and that he better be prepared for an all night session. Jed slid back to see her face and as their eyes met he feel in love with her all over again.

Ronnie decided that he would pull off a logging road not too far from the Height of the Land pull off. He could see them when they went past the road and there was no way for them to see him until he was back on the road. He turned onto the dirt road and remembered that if he went up it far enough that he could see the pull off where the Saab was parked. This would give him the advantage as he could get going down the road as soon as the Saab began to leave the pull off. He would also be able to see if there were other cars leaving at the same time so he would know exactly how much time he had to do what he planned to do to the MassHoles. He slid the rig to a stop and left it idling as he opened the door so he could turn and look down towards the pull off. The Saab was still there and it did not take him very long to pick out the couple either. They looked to be so happy and that only irritated him that much more. They appeared to care less about what they had done earlier and obviously did not take his warning seriously. Ronnie could feel his heart begin to race as he let every little possibility get to him. He could not make a mistake like last time and the anticipation of another confrontation was driving him crazy. He would prove to all his trucking buddies that he could still drive the rig and rule the road. He would show them that Ronnie still had balls of steel and was to be respected. Skeeter would be back to being the lowly tow truck driver amongst the big rig men. He would be back to being the butt of the jokes and Ronnie would take his place amongst the respected drivers again. The thought brought a wide grin to his face as he looked down upon his way back to the top of the heap. The MassHoles would be his ticket and he was about to cash it in. The couple headed towards the Saab and Ronnie swung his legs back around into the cab. He slammed the door and threw the rig into gear as it lurched forward down the dirt road. The Saab was the only car to leave the pull off and that was exactly what Ronnie had hoped for and now what he had gotten. He increased the pressure on the accelerator making the rig pick up speed as he shifted effortlessly through the gears. Just as he reached the end of the road the Saab came into view in front him. He missed it by mere inches as the rig hit the black top road. The tires of the rig gripped as he turned towards the Saab and quickly closed on it striking it in the rear on the passengers’ side of the car. The Saab swerved and headed for the wooden guardrail with little chance to miss it. Ronnie floored the gas pedal and gave the Saab one final shove towards the guardrail assuring it would hit it and not be able to swerve away from it. He smiled as he felt the rig make contact with the rear end one last time before he swerved his rig away from the closing rail. He swerved back towards the middle of the pavement and slowed as he tried to watch the Saab. He saw the Saab make contact and go through the guardrail disappearing over the side of the mountain. His heart was racing as he turned back and drove away from the scene. He was the man again!!!

Jed and Erica never saw the rig coming at them. Jed saw it suddenly fill his rear view mirror and at the same time making contact with his Saab. He struggled to control it after the first strike as it headed towards the guardrail in front of him. Eric was screaming as she too saw the guardrail and nothing else. She didn’t have the luxury of seeing the truck just before it hit so she was even a little more shocked at the impact. Jed begin to get the Saab to respond and then the truck hit them again and this time Jed knew there was no chance to recover and miss the guardrail. In fact, he was quite sure they were going to hit it extremely hard as he had tried to accelerate away from it but now was headed straight into it. He tried to hit the brakes but there was no time as the Saab crushed the wooden guardrail which gave way to the weight and speed of the cars impact. The airbags deployed and blocked the view that was before Jed and Erica now. Trees were before and below them as the Saab began to lose altitude from its short flight. The car came crashing down to the ground after bouncing off of a few trees. The impact with the ground was hard and the car crumpled around them as it began to roll over and over down the side of the mountain before finally coming to a stop at the base of a large pine tree on the side of the mountain. Everything was suddenly quiet as Erica tried to figure out what had happened to them. Jed lay quietly on his side of the car but Erica could not see him as there was still too much dust and smoke in the air. The air bags had kept her alive and she hoped they had kept Jed alive as well. She suddenly felt a sharp pain in hers right leg. She felt groggy and soon began to drift from consciousness.
