Broken Part Nine
Erica opened her eyes and tried to get them to focus as best she could in the faint light available in the room she was in at the moment. She remembered the Saab crashing and remembered someone coming to help get them out. She was confused about what happened after that and was not sure where she was now. She thought it must be a hospital and that Jed must be here too somewhere. She decided she would find the call button and summon a nurse to help her put the missing pieces together. She tried to move and yet she couldn’t move her arms or even her legs. She suddenly felt fear taking over her mind as she realized she was not in a hospital at all and remembered that the two men had placed her on their four wheelers. She remembered seeing them smashing Jed’s side of the car but not trying to get him out. She bent as much as she could until she saw the rope that was around her body holding her in place on the bed. She tried to move and could only manage a little wiggle. She listened but heard nothing and wanted to yell but also wasn’t convinced it would be a good idea to let them know she was awake as she feared what they may do to her then. She just slowly worked on trying to get something free from the ropes. Her hands, her legs, just something to at least make progress on freeing herself from this imprisonment in what she thought was hell. Her head was pounding and her leg was throbbing. She kept at it for what seemed like hours to her and slowly was making progress. Her hand became free and she quickly was able to undo the rest of the rope from her body. She listened for a few minutes but all she could hear was her own heart pounding. She slid off of the bed and immediately felt the sharp pain in her leg. She looked around for something to use as a crutch and found a walking stick in the closet of the room. She made her way rather noisily to the main room of the cabin and was happy to see nobody was there with her. She looked around and found some energy bars in the draws that looked like they were on the old side but she needed to eat. She turned on the faucet and drank to quench her thirst. She looked in the cupboards and found a water bottle with a shoulder strap which she filled and then slung over her shoulder. She headed for the door with her little stock of food and water. She did not know where she was going to go but she knew being here was not the best idea either. If they came back and she was here then it likely would be a bad situation that would only keep getting worse. The only place she knew she needed to be was out of here and quickly. Once outside she looked around and felt even more lost as all she saw was woods and more woods. There was a nice view but it seemed to lead to no where to her eyes. She longed to see the familiar landmarks of Boston. At least then she would know where to go for help but here on tree just looked like another as did the trails around the cabin. One trail looked like the other to her and the only difference was what direction they went in. She didn’t know if they ended up somewhere or just went around to here again or maybe even led to no where. She felt very anxious and almost frozen as she just could not pick a route to go even though she knew she must pick one to get away from here. She study each trail and looked out at the view to try and see if anything made sense to her if she was patient. She could not seem to focus as the fear was just over taking her mind. She started to cry and wished Jed was here with her as he would know what to do to get them out of here. She missed him so much right now and wanted to be close to him. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed uncontrollably. She opened her eyes and saw the tracks in the mud leading away from the cabin. They were the tracks belonging too the four wheeler’s that the men had taken her away on earlier in the day. The rain was new and she was unsure what to make of these tracks. Where did they lead too? Back to the car? To where the men lived? To help or too trouble? She just didn’t know but did know she needed to go in some direction. At least this way she would be going somewhere and it was likely she thought that the men would not be heading deeper into the woods. She decided she would head that way and if she heard anything that she would just step off the trail. Erica began to walk down the trail following the tracks before her and it seemed to ease her mind a little as she took each step. The pain didn’t fade from her leg but she knew she needed to just keep going. The sun was going down and the idea of being in the woods at night frightened her.
