Broken Part Six
Ronnie pointed towards the Saab stuck in the woods not far form where they had stopped the ATV’s. He really didn’t want to look inside but he knew that it was part of the deal but it had been one he never felt comfortable with before. They had to make sure there was not anyone left to talk about what had happened. Many people had disappeared on trips to Maine and the road to Height of the Land was an end to many trips too. However, they took care of everything so nothing was ever found. The bodies were buried and the cars taken apart and gotten rid of as well. The local sheriff or State Police never found anything to investigate. With no bodies, no cars, and no damage to the trucks there was simply nothing to be looking for on those roads. Skeeter was a master at getting rid of everything and everyone just did their part and kept their mouths shut. Legend had it that the ones who thought of speaking were also suddenly involved in bad wrecks in their rigs. Their families were also found dead as well with a note from the trucker who crashed. The legend said the trucker would die in a suicide crash after he had killed his family. Nobody knew who carried these things out or when the last one was as it just never happened that anyone crossed the line. It was what it was and they did what they did when the needed to do it. No questions and no mention of second thoughts either.
Skeeter hoped off of his ATV and headed towards the mangled mess that was the Saab. As he got close a woman yelled out to him for help. He turned back towards Ronnie with his eyes wide open now. It had only happened once before that someone was found alive in the car. They just left the person there and they did die as they took the car apart around him. The problem was that the cars were becoming safer over time and this was after all a Saab which meant top of the line safety features as well. Apparently the air bags had done their job quite well. Ronnie motioned for Skeeter to go forward as he hung back since they already knew what he looked like from the run in earlier in the day. This way Skeeter could at least find out if they had been able to contact anyone and they could go from there as far as the next move was concerned. Skeeter made his way to the car and bent over to look through the window. He was nervous but when he saw the face of a beautiful woman staring back at him he really became nervous. He was not used to be this close to a beautiful woman. Sure she had some blood on her face and looked like she was in pain but to Skeeter she still looked like Miss Universe. He asked if she was okay and she said she thought she broke her leg and that Jed, the driver, was stuck on his side. He was pinned in from the steering wheel and other damage to the Saab on his side. Skeeter couldn’t see him as he was still buried in the air bags. He asked if he was okay and Jed answered back that he was okay. Then Skeeter leaned closer and looked to see what he could do for Erica. She said she thought her leg was broken and they had tried to call for help but couldn’t get a signal. Skeeter liked what he was hearing and turned towards Ronnie and gave him a scary smile along with thumbs up.
Skeeter told them that he could just go get help or take Erica along so she would be able to get help quicker and then send help back for Jed. Jed urged Erica to go as he would be fine and her leg could be bleeding inside too. She didn’t want to leave him and in fact she felt fear of Skeeter. She wanted to just stay where she was until she knew that it was real help and not this scraggly looking man. Jed urged her and Skeeter urged her as well. He told her it would be best for both of them as she could get the help she needed sooner and that would also free the rescuers to just tend to Jed when they arrived. Reluctantly she agreed to go with him. Skeeter told her he would go get a couple sticks and an ace bandage from his ATV pack to make a little splint for her. Then they could go to get help. Skeeter made his way back and told Ronnie what was going to happen. Ronnie wa suncomfortable with taking her back to the shop area as it would put too many eyes on the situation. Skeeter mentioned the cabin at the top of the mountain off the old logging roads. Nobody ever went there anymore and it would be perfect. Ronnie agreed but asked what they were going to do with them. Skeeter looked Ronnie in these eyes, “Them? Nothing with them”, as a smile broke over his face. Ronnie shook his head, “Skeeter lets just leave them here man. They won’t make it and nobody knows they are here but us. It will be dark soon enough. We can come back and take care of them then and get on with getting rid of everything. Skeeter shook his head no and moved towards the car again. Ronnie tried to grab him but he was off already. He knew that Skeeter was good at this and decided for now it was best to let him do his thing and save his own ass.
Soon Skeeter had Erica in the splint and out of the car. She looked up and saw Ronnie but it did not register to her that she had seen him only hours earlier. She had no reaction that indicated any recognition of Ronnie. He felt better when he saw she did not recognize him. He helped her onto the back of the ATV and then got ready to r\go. She looked at him and he could tell she wanted to say something. His insides were crawling as his nerves were rolling his stomach. He thought he might puke and was doing his best to hold it back. Erica finally said “Can’t one of you stay here and help try to get Jed out of the car?” Ronnie looked at Skeeter who quickly responded “ nope, he will be fine right where he is and this way we don’t make anything worse on him.” “Well can’t one of you stay to keep him company? Help keep him calm at least?” pleaded Erica. Her eyes then met Ronnie’s and it registered with her that she KNEW him… she began to scream “JEE”. She didn’t even finish his name before Skeeter had pounced on her from behind. His hand was over her mouth and closed off her air. Jed yelled for her from the car but felt hopeless as he could not see or hear enough. He simply could not get out of the car no matter what he tried. He squirmed and yelled to the top of his lungs. Ronnie ran towards the car with a crowbar he grabbed off of his ATV. Soon he smashed the window near Jed and repeatedly hit the air bag. The solid thuds let him know he was making contact with Jed. Once there was no more noise he pulled the air bag out of the way to reveal Jed’s slumping body. His face was covered in blood and a very fresh gash was opened above his left eye. Ronnie felt a surge of adrenaline going through him as he turned back towards Skeeter and Erica. He was still struggling with her so Ronnie ran over there and raised the crowbar once more. She was out quickly and Skeeter began to run his hands on hers thighs. Ronnie grabbed him and shoved him back. “Cut that shit out!!” yelled Ronnie. Skeeter looked at him with piercing eyes but did not say a word to encourage Ronnie to swing the crowbar at him. The tied her to the ATV and headed for the cabin.
