Broken Part Two

Broken Part Two

The tow truck pulled in beside the 18 wheeler and eased to a stop. The driver slowly eased out of his truck and made his way towards the flat tire to have a look. “Hey Skeeter!! You get lost coming here or what!!1 Man, let’s get this done already. I’ve got me some drivin to do. Gonna catch me some Chussins”, said the truck driver. A wide grin eased across Skeeter’s face as he saw the driver coming around the rig. “Gee Ronnie you shoulda just squished them when ya had the chance. It a saved us all a little bit a trouble. Now we gotta get you fixed to run again. Losin ya touch aren’t ya. Ronnie I get ya goin again real quick, yessa I will.” “Just get it going Skeeter and cut with the lip service before I beat you down again boy”, snapped Ronnie. Skeeter quickly got to work and the tire was quickly changed out and Ronnie was ready to go. He looked at Skeeter and smiled, “Get the place ready Skeeter. We gonna teach them a lesson bout who’s roads these are here in the mountains. Get everyone lookin for that damn Saab but tell em boys to remember that they are mine.” Skeeter grinned and hoped in his tow truck and squeeled off down the road. He was on the CB quickly and asking the other big rigs to be watching for the Saab from Massachusetts. Ronnie fired up his rig and started up the road in the direction the Saab had disappeared. He hoped they would be stopping at the scenic overlooks along the way so he could catch up too them. He put the hammer down and was soon back up to the blazing speed that scared everyone except the drivers of the big trucks.

Jed’s hands were slowly beginning to regain color as he eased his grip on the steering wheel. He was still a bit shaken from the ordeal but his nerves were slowly returning to normal. He had driven in Boston and experienced the no rules driving in that city everyday. It never rattled him and he never had road rage but this was a different experience all together. The erratic driving in Boston was expected and maybe a fender bender here or there was even expected as it was just life in the city. This though was different as these trucks could simply crush you with their size and speed. There was no fender bender if you were involved with these trucks. If they hit you, they simply crushed you. There were also wild rumors of these guys purposely running people off the road but none had ever been found guilty of such a crime. There simply was never any real witness to any of the accident where cars went off the road and nobody survived those crashes either from what Jed could remember from the news. He thought to himself that it was almost a perfect crime as who would be the witness? Almost everyone who went through there didn’t live there and were just on scenic drives. The truckers owned the road and police were rarely even seen on those roads as nobody lived there either. Just a road to nowhere is what they really seemed like to Jed. He turned towards Erica and said “I am sorry for all that back there honey. I tried to be nice to the guy but he wouldn’t have any of it. I am sorry if you were scared at all.” Erica smiled and grabbed Jed’s free hand before saying “Jed it isn’t your fault. He was an ass and probably didn’t even understand you’re English. He only understands hick anyway. So be thankful that we are out of there and still can enjoy our day.” Jed squeezed her hand and smiled as he was not really surprised by her take of the situation. On the way up she had seen a sign that said “Maine, The Way Life Should Be” and had made sure to make a few comments about that little statement. She decided that life the way it should be was a matter of perspective and Maine was NOT the way it should be too her. She commented on the number of overweight people in the State and said she was surprised there was that many overweight people since they had no teeth to eat with in the first place. She said bad hygiene led to rotten teeth and that overweight was because the State was full of lazy people who were not very well educated. Jed remembered thinking that Erica was usually a little softer than this but something had struck her when she saw the sign and it seemed to be more than just the long ride.

The road was full of twists and turns as it made its way up the high terrain. Jed and Erica were blessed like all the other tourists with great views every now and then which only seemed to get better around each and every turn. Jed finally pulled off the road to an overlook. As he stopped the car he asked Erica if she was okay with stopping or if she just wanted to go home now. She didn’t even answer him as she just opened the door and got out of the car. He knew she was making the effort and that made him happy. She certainly could have been in a tizzy now and wanting to just go home. He slid out of his side and walked towards her and put his arm around her shoulder. They stood and admired the view. A few trees where still in the way but they could see a valley below that began to give them a sense of how high they were already on this trip. The foliage was simply stunning and this seemed to please Erica even more as she went back to the car to grab the camera.

The truck was cruising and headed towards town and down the mountain. Erica lifted her head in time to see the trucker jam his brakes hard to slow down as he peered over towards her before letting off of his breaks and heading down the road. She thought for a second he was looking at the Saab but decided she was more likely what he was looking at as they probably didn’t get to see women of her character up here very often. So she grabbed the camera and returned to Jed who was sitting on a rock just looking out towards the horizon.  Erica handed Jed the camera and he began to take pictures and made sure to get some of his beautiful woman. She was stunning for sure he though and considered himself lucky to be able to share himself with her, well, most of the time anyway. They took their time enjoying the views.

A call for Ronnie came across the CB advising him of a Saab with MassHole plates that was parked up on one of the first overlooks on way towards Height of Land. Ronnie thanked the other driver for the information and stepped harder on the gas pedal asking his rig to do a little more than it wanted too. He was pushing its very limits to try and catch up to the lighter Saab that had a head start on him. His heart pumped as he knew he was making up time. He would pay them back and then all of the drivers and Skeeter would enjoy the fun. Time appeared to be on his side and his reputation would have a chance to be repaired after the last incident.
